Macbeth

A year and a half ago, I was in Scotland exploring the castles and terrain. The castles that were in ruins had an interesting feature that I wasn’t expecting: Mold. It was both disgusting, fascinating – but beautiful. I enjoy taking pictures, so I ended up capturing many photos of the ruins and mold. The mold grows when no one is looking. Macbeth is the story of a man whose soul becomes tainted. I have had the privilege to work on this play with many talented actors and designers. We wanted to set the play in modern times, but also to make it feel timeless. We coined the phrase Urban Elizabethan. Shakespeare’s characters and stories still have the power to inform our lives today. Another theme I see in the play is the conflict between light and dark. As the story progresses, we are unsure whether light or dark is going to pervade. As you watch this play, I hope that you see the dangers when our ambition overreaches our compassion.
